Nigger (Orsotriaena medus cinerea)

Nigger butterfly

Nigger butterfly is a member of family Nymphalidae, which is often categorized as a member of Family Satyridae (Browns or Satyrs).  According to the available information, this butterfly is common in South Asian countries as; Sri Lanka, India, Singapore etc. and Australia.  


Nigger is a very common butterfly in the observed location. It has quite weak flight and does not leave the ground level. It prefers shaded areas, paddy fields and where the larval host plant is abundant.

It has a prominent white stripe on the underside of both forewing and hindwing.

Upperside view
Upperside of the Nigger butterfly is marked with slightly visible white stripe which goes from costa of forewing to tornus area of the hindwing. It is highly alerted butterfly when in open winged position. Therefore it is difficult to capture the open wing photographs of the Nigger butterfly.
